No doubt that the majority of Latvians were forcibly conscripted and had a little or no choice between becoming an inferior labour force to the Nazi machine or legionnaire. Many of them indeed had made a voluntary choice to fulfill their noble desires to fight for their own country.

At the same token, it would be quite difficult to deny that amongst those soldiers who were fighting in the Vaffen SS units against the Soviets, there were no war criminals. Some of the Legion soldiers, and it is well documented in a case-by-case study were part of the death squads who are responsible for murder of racially ‘inferior’ people. We know these killers as Arajs Commando. I think denying that part of Latvian history will serve no good for Latvia and Her reputation in the world.
